The 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that about 15.3 million people aged 12 or older used prescription drugs non-medically in the past year, and 6.5 million did so in the past month.
The most common way people obtain the medications abused are from friends and family so proper disposal of unused medicines can reduce the risk of misuse and abuse. According to the Iowa Pharmacy Association, improper disposal of used and expired medication can also create potential environmental and health impacts. Proper disposal can help keep substances out of landfills and water systems.
The free drug disposal drop-off event is sponsored by: Chickasaw Connections, the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department, Chickasaw County Emergency Management, the New Hampton Police Department, and Pathways Behavioral Services.
