The 2014 Iowa Youth Survey Results are in and Chickasaw County has seen significant improvements in their underage drinking rates! We have made great progress, but still have work to do to create long-lasting, sustainable change.
Here are some of the statistics:
In the 2012 Iowa Youth Survey (IYS), 58% of Chickasaw County juniors reported they had consumed alcohol as compared to 48% of their State of Iowa peers. In 2014, that increased to 62% for Chickasaw County 11th graders and 52% for juniors across the State.
In 2012, 34% of Chickasaw County juniors reported first drinking "more than a few sips of alcohol" by age 15 as compared to 23% of their State of Iowa peers. In 2014, that was down to 26% of Chickasaw County juniors, the same as the State rate.
In the 2012 IYS, 42% of Chickasaw County juniors reported having consumed at least one drink of alcohol in the last 30 days as compared to 26% of their State of Iowa peers. In 2014, that decreased to 26% for Chickasaw County juniors and 23% for 11th graders across the state.
In 2012, 35% of Chickasaw County juniors reported binge drinking in the past 30 days as compared to 19% of their State of Iowa peers. In 2014, those rates were down to 17% of Chickasaw County 11th graders and 14% of juniors across the State (2012 and 2014 IYS).
In 2012, 24% of Chickasaw County juniors reported that most of the students in their school feel it would be "wrong" or "very wrong" to drink alcohol as compared to 32% of their State of Iowa peers (2012 IYS).
When asked if they would be more popular (respected or cool) among students in their school, 44% of Chickasaw County 11th graders replied they would be more popular if they drank alcoholic beverages compared to the 33% of 11th graders across Iowa (2014 Iowa youth Survey).
Data shows we are on the high end, but comparable to other communities across Iowa, in regards to youth alcohol consumption than in years past. We hope to continue this downtrend and one day fall below the state averages for current underage and binge drinking rates! Please contact us to find out how you can support this initiative.
Thank you to those School Districts serving Chickasaw County youth for administering the Iowa Youth Survey to your 6th, 8th, and 11th grade students! It provides us with important information to direct our efforts for improving the health and safety of our youth!
